Mesh Complications

Many women have suffered from the placement of vaginal mesh inserted for urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. The mesh can be placed vaginally, laparoscopically, through an open incision or robotically.

Our practice has vast experience with the complete removal of all types of mesh and mesh procedures.  Dr. Veronikis has an international reputation for complete removal of pelvic mesh, whether exposed or eroded into other organs.

The mesh placed as a sling to support the urethra and under the vaginal wall can become exposed in the vagina. This is called exposure, and the mesh is visible and palpable in the vagina.  The mesh can cause vaginal pain, pelvic pain, pain with intimacy to both the patient and her partner, as well as a vaginal discharge that may be bloody or have a foul odor.  Alternatively, the mesh can be in the urethra or the bladder.

Additionally, when vaginal mesh placed for vaginal prolapse for support of the bladder or bowel and is in contact with the wall of pelvic organs, the mesh can erode into the pelvic organs, such as the bowel, the bladder or the urethra. This can lead to infections and pelvic pain, as well as other organ specific complications. The vaginal or pelvic mesh may also involve nerve and muscle complexes causing pain at rest, with mobility, motion or intimacy.
